In celebration of Fulfillment Daily’s one-year anniversary, we are launching a new “People” section. Melissa Stephenson is one of Fulfillment Daily’s talented science journalists. Here she shares with us her secrets to a fulfilled life.

What 3 things or experiences bring you the greatest sense of fulfillment in life?

  • Laughing
  • Cooking (especially something that smells really good!)
  • Sitting in the sun and doing nothing–just appreciating its warmth!

What are small things you do everyday to be happy/fulfilled?

I start and end each day with three thoughts about what I’m grateful for. I try to make or do things by hand every day, be it cooking, cleaning the house, or making some type of craft–as a person who works a desk job, I find this “manual” time helps me relax and be happy/fulfilled.

People often find they don’t have enough time. How do you make time for those?

I schedule personal time in my calendar–whether it’s a hike, reading a book, or cooking an elaborate meal, I commit that time to myself. I do this because I think my health and happiness are just as (if not more!) important than any other meeting I would honor in my calendar.

What health habits do you stick to no matter what?

I eat well (lots of fresh, whole foods), drink lots of water, and take the stairs.

What’s your best relationship tip?

Listen first.

You seem to balance both happiness and success? What’s your secret to happy productivity?

Balance! Work hard, but leave time for yourself too. We’re often driven to push our work life to the max, but in the long run personal health and happiness strongly affect work productivity. Cultivating more balance now is an investment in more success and productivity for the future.

What – in your opinion – is the best way to spread happiness and fulfillment to others?

Use kind words. It’s the small opportunities to spread light that we can really take advantage of to make a difference in anyone’s life, any day.

What is a quote you live by?

“The happiest people don’t have the best of everything, they make the best of everything.”
